TalkFerry and VRCT compared

VRCT is the tool most people try first for translating in VRChat, and it is free. TalkFerry does a different job: it makes people hear you. Here is how to choose, written by the people who make TalkFerry.

Based on VRCT’s own repository and documentation as of September 2026.

The short version

Choose VRCT if text is enough

VRCT (VRChat Chatbox Translator & Transcription) puts what you say or type into the chatbox in another language, and shows a translated log of what others say. It is free and open source, it can translate on your own PC without an API key, and it has an overlay you can see in VR.

Choose TalkFerry if you want to be heard

TalkFerry speaks the translation through your microphone, so people hear you in their language even when they are not looking at your chatbox. There is no model to download, no GPU load and no API key. After the first 5 minutes it is paid.

Why voice changes the conversation

Chatbox text works when someone is facing you and reading. In a busy instance, across a room, or while people are doing something together, they often are not.

A voice reaches everyone who can hear you, the way talking normally does. TalkFerry also starts translating while you are still speaking, so the rhythm stays closer to a normal exchange. The voice is synthetic, not a copy of yours.

Where VRCT is the stronger choice

  • You do not want to pay anything.
  • You want your audio to stay on your own PC.
  • You play in a headset and need to read translations there.
  • You talk for many hours a day, where per-minute pricing adds up.

VRCT and TalkFerry questions

Is VRCT free?

Yes. VRCT is free and open source. Its default translation engine runs on your own PC, so there is no per-minute cost. TalkFerry gives you 5 free minutes and then sells minute packs.

Does VRCT speak the translation out loud?

VRCT itself sends text to the VRChat chatbox. Its author publishes a separate add-on, VRCT-TTS, that reads VRCT messages aloud. TalkFerry sends a spoken translation through a virtual microphone as its main feature, along with the chatbox text.

Can I use VRCT and TalkFerry together?

You can install both, but run one translator for your own speech at a time: two tools writing to the chatbox will overwrite each other. A practical split is TalkFerry for your voice and a headset overlay tool for reading what others say.

Which one should I pick for VR?

If you need to read translations inside the headset, VRCT has an overlay mode for that and TalkFerry does not. If you mainly want other people to hear you in their language, TalkFerry does that whether you wear a headset or not.
