The basics
What is TalkFerry?
TalkFerry is a real-time voice translator. On a Windows PC it translates your microphone into another language and sends the translated voice into VRChat, Discord or any game with voice chat, and it can subtitle what other people say. On an Android phone it translates a face-to-face conversation on a split screen. Both apps use one account and one minute balance.
Do the people I talk to need to install anything?
No. On PC, TalkFerry acts as your microphone, so everyone else simply hears the translated voice in the app they already use. On the phone, one phone is enough: the other person reads and listens on the half of the screen that faces them.
How fast is the translation?
It is simultaneous rather than sentence by sentence: the translated voice starts while you are still talking and usually runs about one to two seconds behind you. The panel shows the current delay. Speed depends on your connection and on how busy the translation service is.
Which languages does TalkFerry support?
74 languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. Any of them can be the language you speak or the language the other person hears. The language you speak can also be detected automatically.
Is what I say private?
Audio is streamed through our server to Google Gemini, which does the translation. We do not record or store your audio or the transcripts. While TalkFerry runs on Gemini’s unpaid tier, Google may use what is said to improve its products and human reviewers may read or listen to it, so do not use TalkFerry for anything confidential. The privacy policy has the details.
Does it copy my voice?
No. The translated voice is a synthetic voice, not a clone of yours.
How accurate is it?
Good enough for a conversation, not good enough to rely on blindly. Names, slang, in-jokes and people talking over each other are where it goes wrong. Short, complete sentences work best. Do not use it for emergencies or for medical, legal or safety-critical matters.
Where is TalkFerry available?
TalkFerry is offered worldwide. The Android app and the minute packs come through Google Play, so they are available wherever Google Play is. You must be 18 or older.
VRChat
Does VRChat have a built-in translator?
Not for voice, as of September 2026. VRChat does have two official features that tools can use: you can choose which microphone the game listens to, and OSC lets an app write text into the chatbox above your avatar. TalkFerry uses both: the translated voice goes in through a virtual microphone and the text appears in your chatbox.
Is TalkFerry a VRChat mod?
No. TalkFerry does not modify the game or touch its files. It plays the translated voice into a virtual audio cable that you select as your microphone in VRChat, and it writes subtitles to the chatbox through OSC, a feature VRChat documents and supports. TalkFerry is not affiliated with or endorsed by VRChat.
Does it work on Quest or inside a VR headset?
TalkFerry runs on a Windows PC, so it works when you play VRChat on PC, in desktop mode or with a PC-connected headset. People hear your translated voice and see your chatbox subtitles either way. The TalkFerry panel itself is a desktop window, not a SteamVR overlay, so you will not see it inside the headset without a desktop-view tool. There is no app for standalone Quest.
How is TalkFerry different from VRCT?
VRCT is a free, open-source tool that translates your speech into chatbox text and transcribes what others say, and it can run translation on your own PC. TalkFerry sends a spoken translation through your microphone as well as the chatbox text, and needs no GPU or API key, but it is a paid service after the first 5 minutes. If chatbox text is enough for you, VRCT is a good free choice.
Discord and games
Does Discord have a built-in voice translator?
No. As of September 2026 Discord does not translate voice calls or voice channels. To be heard in another language you need something that sits between your microphone and Discord, which is what TalkFerry does: you choose the TalkFerry cable as your input device and the people in the call hear the translation.
Is TalkFerry a Discord bot?
No. There is nothing to invite and no server permissions to grant. TalkFerry runs on your own PC and works as your microphone, so it behaves the same in a server voice channel, a group call and a direct call. TalkFerry is not affiliated with or endorsed by Discord.
Is the translation a voice or captions?
Both, in different directions. What you say goes out as a spoken voice (and as chatbox text in VRChat). What other people say comes to you as live captions in the TalkFerry panel, and you can also have it read out in your headphones.
Which games does it work with?
Any PC game or app that lets you choose a microphone input, because TalkFerry shows up as a microphone. We do not test or promise specific titles, and some games restrict audio tools, so check the rules of the game you play.
Will it lower my frame rate?
It should not. Speech is translated in the cloud, so TalkFerry does not run a model on your graphics card. The app itself is a small always-on-top panel.
Can it tell who is speaking?
No. Understand mode hears the game or call as one mixed audio stream, so captions are not labeled by speaker. It works best when one person talks at a time; several people talking over each other, loud music and background noise reduce accuracy.
The phone app
Does the phone app work without internet?
No. Translation happens in the cloud, so both the phone and the PC app need a connection. If you often travel without data, an app with offline language packs is a better fit.
How is the phone app different from Google Translate conversation mode?
Google Translate is free and good, and for many trips it is all you need. TalkFerry is built around sitting across from someone: the far half of the screen is turned toward the other person, each side has its own talk button, and the translation is spoken and shown in large type. It also shares one minute balance with the PC app.
Is there an iPhone or Mac version?
Not yet. TalkFerry is available for Android phones and Windows PCs. An iPhone app is planned.
Minutes and price
How much does TalkFerry cost?
Every account starts with 5 free minutes, no card needed. After that you buy minute packs in the Android app: 60 minutes for $6.99, 200 minutes for $19.99 or 500 minutes for $44.99. There is no subscription. The price shown in Google Play, in your currency and with local taxes, is the one you pay.
What counts as a minute?
The time the translator spends processing speech, including about two seconds after each sentence while it finishes. Silence is not counted. In our own testing, an hour of lively conversation used roughly 19 minutes. Understand mode uses minutes faster because it processes everything it hears.
Do minutes expire? Is there a subscription?
There is no subscription and nothing renews. Minute packs are one-time purchases and we do not currently set an expiry date on minutes. Minutes have no cash value and cannot be transferred.
Do I need an Android phone to buy minutes?
For now, yes. Minute packs are sold through Google Play in the Android app. The PC app uses the same balance: pair it with your phone or sign in with the same Google account. You can try the PC app with the 5 free minutes without a phone.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are made through Google Play and follow Google Play’s refund policy. If a purchase is refunded, its minutes are removed from your balance.
Download and setup
Do I need a powerful PC, a graphics card or an API key?
No. The translation runs in the cloud, so TalkFerry does not use your GPU and leaves your frame rate alone. There is no API key to create or paste: you sign in with Google and start. You do need an internet connection.
Is the virtual audio cable safe?
The TalkFerry installer offers VB-CABLE, a widely used virtual audio driver made by VB-Audio, downloaded from its maker. Windows asks for administrator permission because it is a driver. It adds two audio devices, CABLE Input and CABLE Output, and you can remove it from Windows’ installed apps list at any time.
How do I delete my account?
In the Android app, open Settings and choose Delete account. If you cannot use the app, email support@talkferry.com from the address of your account. Deleting the account signs out your devices and removes your email address from our records; remaining minutes are lost. The account deletion page lists what is kept.
Try it with the first 5 minutes free
