English to Japanese, and Japanese to English
Japanese speakers are one of the largest communities in VRChat. TalkFerry covers both halves of the conversation with them.
You say, You say, in English Can I join you? I am still new here.
They hear, They hear, in Japanese ご一緒してもいいですか?まだ始めたばかりなんです。
They say, They say, in Japanese もちろん!こっちにどうぞ。
You read, You read, in English Of course! Come over here.
- Your English is spoken in Japanese through a virtual microphone, in VRChat, Discord or any game where you can pick a mic.
- In VRChat the Japanese text also appears in your chatbox, so people can read along.
- Their Japanese comes back as English captions in a panel on top of the game, with the original line underneath.
Getting better translations between Japanese and English
The two languages are built very differently, so a little care in how you speak goes a long way.
- Use short, complete sentences. Say who is doing what: Japanese often drops the subject, and English needs one.
- Avoid idioms and sarcasm. “That is sick” will not arrive the way you meant it.
- Spell out names or type them. Usernames and place names are easy to mishear.
- Leave a short pause before you hand over. The translation runs a second or two behind you.
- If a line comes out strangely, say it again in simpler words instead of repeating it louder.
Face to face in Japan, or with a Japanese friend
The Android app splits the screen and turns the far half toward the other person. You hold your button and speak English; they hear and read Japanese, then answer the same way.

Japanese and English questions
Is there a real-time Japanese to English voice translator for PC?
Yes. TalkFerry for Windows listens to game or call audio and shows Japanese speech as English captions while people talk, and it can read the translation out in your headphones. In the other direction it speaks your English as Japanese through a virtual microphone.
Can Japanese players hear me in Japanese in VRChat?
Yes. With Translate set from English to Japanese, the translated voice goes out through your microphone and the Japanese text appears in the chatbox above your avatar.
How good is the Japanese translation?
Good enough for everyday conversation, and it still makes mistakes. Japanese often leaves out the subject and relies on context and politeness levels, so short, complete sentences translate best. Names and slang are the usual trouble spots.
Does it work the other way, for Japanese speakers?
Yes. Set Japanese as the language you speak and English, or any other supported language, as the language they hear. The app interface itself is in English.
