Face-to-face conversation translator for Android

Put your phone on the table between you. Each of you holds a button and talks; the other hears the translation and reads it in large type, the right way up.

5 free minutes to start. Pay as you go after that, with no subscription.

A two-way translator app that fits on one screen

Most translator apps make you pass the phone back and forth. TalkFerry splits the screen instead, so both of you can see your side at the same time.

  • The far half faces them

The top half of the screen is turned 180°, so the person opposite reads it without you turning the phone around.

  • Hold to talk, one button each

Each side has its own button. Only the side being held sends audio, so the app never guesses who is speaking.

  • It speaks and shows

The translation plays from the speaker and appears as large subtitles that are readable across a table.

  • 74 languages, searchable

Pick a language for each side, search the list by name, and swap the two sides with one tap.

For the small conversations that matter

Asking for directions, ordering, checking in, talking with a relative’s family, a quick chat with someone at the next table.

  • They install nothing. One phone is enough.
  • Silence is not billed. Minutes are only used while someone is talking.
  • No account for them. You sign in once with Google; they just talk.

You say, You say, in English Could you recommend something that is not spicy?

They hear, They hear, in Korean 맵지 않은 음식을 추천해 주실 수 있나요?

They say, They say, in Korean 이 메뉴가 제일 인기 있어요.

You hear, You hear, in English This dish is the most popular one.

The same account runs your PC

The phone app is also where you buy minutes and manage your devices. Your PC uses the same balance for voice chat in VRChat, Discord and games.

Pair a PC with a QR code

The PC app shows a code. Scan it with the phone, or type the eight characters, and the PC is signed in.

One balance

Minutes bought on the phone are used by whichever app is translating. There is nothing to transfer.

What TalkFerry does on the PC

When another app is the better choice

  • Google Translate’s conversation mode is free and, for many trips, all you need. Phones from Samsung and Apple include their own interpreter apps.
  • TalkFerry needs a connection. If you travel without data, choose an app with offline language packs.
  • It is for Android. An iPhone app is planned but not available yet.
  • It is paid after the first 5 minutes. Pricing
  • It does not translate phone calls, videos or other apps. It translates the two people at the phone.

Phone app questions

Do the people I talk to need to install anything?

No. On PC, TalkFerry acts as your microphone, so everyone else simply hears the translated voice in the app they already use. On the phone, one phone is enough: the other person reads and listens on the half of the screen that faces them.

Which languages does TalkFerry support?

74 languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. Any of them can be the language you speak or the language the other person hears. The language you speak can also be detected automatically.

Does the phone app work without internet?

No. Translation happens in the cloud, so both the phone and the PC app need a connection. If you often travel without data, an app with offline language packs is a better fit.

How is the phone app different from Google Translate conversation mode?

Google Translate is free and good, and for many trips it is all you need. TalkFerry is built around sitting across from someone: the far half of the screen is turned toward the other person, each side has its own talk button, and the translation is spoken and shown in large type. It also shares one minute balance with the PC app.

Is there an iPhone or Mac version?

Not yet. TalkFerry is available for Android phones and Windows PCs. An iPhone app is planned.

Is what I say private?

Audio is streamed through our server to Google Gemini, which does the translation. We do not record or store your audio or the transcripts. While TalkFerry runs on Gemini’s unpaid tier, Google may use what is said to improve its products and human reviewers may read or listen to it, so do not use TalkFerry for anything confidential. The privacy policy has the details.

Try it on the next person you cannot talk to

The first 5 minutes are free, and the same balance works on your PC.
