Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
This policy explains what TalkFerry (“we”, “us”) collects when you use the TalkFerry apps for Android and Windows, why, and what choices you have. Questions: support@talkferry.com.
The short version
- Your voice is translated by Google Gemini. Audio is streamed through our server to Google in real time. We do not record or store your audio or the transcripts.
- Free tier notice. While we use Gemini’s free (unpaid) tier, Google may use what you say to improve its products, and human reviewers may read or listen to it. Don’t use TalkFerry for anything confidential. We will update this policy when we switch to the paid tier.
- We keep only what the service needs: your Google email, your devices, your minute balance and history, and your purchases.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling data.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete account.
What we collect
Account
When you sign in with Google we receive your email address, your Google account identifier and, if Google provides it, your name. We create a TalkFerry account from these.
Devices
For each phone or PC signed in to your account we store: a device name (for example “Pixel 8” or “DESKTOP-1234”), the platform, the app version, a public key generated on the device, and when it was first and last used. You can see and remove your devices in the app.
To stop the free minutes from being claimed again and again, we also receive a device identifier (Android ID on phones, the Windows machine ID on PCs). We store only a keyed hash of it, never the identifier itself. On Android we may also ask Google Play Integrity whether the app and device are genuine when you sign in.
The QR scanner that pairs your phone with your PC is Google ML Kit. It works on your phone and the camera image never leaves it, but ML Kit sends Google diagnostic data (device model, OS and app version, a per-installation identifier and performance figures). We do not receive this data.
Minutes and usage
We keep a ledger of your minutes: free minutes granted, purchases, refunds and each translation session (when it started and ended, how many minutes it used, and which feature it was: face-to-face, Translate or Understand). The minutes counted come from the usage figures Google reports for each session.
Purchases
Purchases are made through Google Play. We receive the purchase token, product, order ID and status to credit your minutes and handle refunds. We never see your card or payment details.
Technical logs
Our servers keep security logs (IP address, time, request type, error codes) for a short period to prevent abuse, enforce rate limits and fix problems.
Audio and translation
- Face-to-face (phone): the microphone is only used while you hold (or tap on) the talk button. Only that side’s audio is sent.
- PC: in Translate mode the app sends your microphone audio; in Understand mode it sends the audio it hears from your computer (for example other players’ voices).
- Audio is streamed through our server to the Google Gemini Live API, which returns the translated speech and text. Our server passes audio through without saving it; the transcripts are shown on your device and are not stored by us.
- Google processes this content under the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
- While we are on Gemini’s unpaid tier, Google may use the content you send (audio and transcripts) to provide, improve and develop its products, and human reviewers may read, annotate and process it. Do not say anything you would not want reviewed, and do not use TalkFerry for sensitive, confidential or personal information.
- Other people’s voices are processed too: the person you talk with face to face, and the people you hear in games on PC. Please let them know you are using a translator.
How we use data
- To run the service: sign-in, your minute balance, the translation relay and connecting your PC.
- To prevent fraud and abuse (repeated free minutes, fake or refunded purchases, overloading the service).
- To process purchases and refunds.
- To answer you when you contact support.
We do not use your data for advertising, we do not build profiles, and we do not sell or rent it.
Who we share it with
- Google — Gemini (translation), Google Sign-In, Google Play (billing, refunds), Play Integrity and ML Kit (QR scanner diagnostics).
- Our hosting provider — our servers run in a data centre in Finland.
- Authorities — only when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Account and device data: while your account exists.
- When you delete your account we remove your email address and name from it, cut the link to your Google account and sign out all your devices. The account can no longer be used.
- The record of your minutes and purchases (the ledger) is kept after deletion, without your email address or name, for accounting, tax and fraud prevention.
- Keyed hashes of your Google account identifier, your email address and your device identifier are also kept. They cannot be turned back into the originals. They stop the free minutes from being claimed again and carry over a negative balance caused by a refund.
- Audio and transcripts: not stored.
- Security logs: a short period, then deleted.
Your choices
- Delete your account in Settings → Delete account, or email us.
- Ask us for a copy of your data or to correct it: support@talkferry.com.
- Turn off microphone or camera access in your phone’s settings at any time (you won’t be able to talk or scan a QR code without them).
Age
TalkFerry is for people aged 18 or over (or the age of majority where you live).
Your rights under data protection laws
Depending on where you live (for example the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Türkiye), the law gives you rights over your personal data: to see it, correct it, delete it, receive a copy, and to object to or restrict how we use it. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. To use these rights, email support@talkferry.com; we answer within one month.
We use your data for three reasons: we need it to provide the service you signed up for (account, minutes, translation, purchases); we have a legitimate interest in preventing fraud and abuse and keeping the service secure; and the law requires us to keep accounting records.
Our servers are in Finland. The operator of TalkFerry is based in Türkiye, and Google processes data in the United States and other countries, so your data is handled outside the country you live in.
Security
Connections are encrypted (TLS). Sign-in tokens are kept in encrypted storage on your device, and each device signs its requests with its own key so a stolen token alone is not enough.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above; important changes will also be shown in the app.
